The First Weeks in Grade One

Grade One has had an exciting beginning of their school year. During the first weeks, our students have been busy adjusting to their new routines. One of the major changes this year is that our students are now attending art, music, or drama for a whole week. They are learning to navigate the schedule changes and the physical changes such as switching between blue and yellow classrooms in the middle of the day. These new experiences are helping them develop independence.

Our learning started in our unit of inquiry which is focused on rights and responsibilities. They are becoming aware that their right to education entails the responsibility to do their best in school. This translates into the fact that as they grow familiar with their new routines in addition to learning new academic skills, the children are also taking on the responsibility of managing their personal belongings. They are practicing taking care of their own supplies and other personal items throughout the day, ensuring that nothing gets lost by the end of the day. Having the right tools is fundamental to learning. We are emphasizing the importance of organization, and they are steadily rising to the challenge. This is a very big undertaking as they begin their new academic journey in primary. The children have put this in writing in their classroom agreements as a sign of their commitment.

We encourage you to support this learning at home by reminding your child to check that they have everything they need before leaving for school. It helps to have a dedicated space at home where they have all their school materials and a backpack big enough to hold all their belongings. With your support and their growing independence, we are confident that this will be a successful and enjoyable year for all.Meanwhile, we are off to a great start!
