Last year, the Ecology Committee set out to transform the former «library» space—left vacant after our return from the pandemic—into something truly meaningful: a cob bench. We envisioned an inviting area where students can connect with nature and each other, and where teachers can lead classes in an inspiring outdoor setting.
Under the expert guidance of Chris López, a dedicated parent and Ecology Committee member, the project came to life. After workers laid the initial rock foundation, the process evolved into a vibrant community effort. Students, parents, and teachers joined forces to mix the first layers of clay, sand, water, and straw, gradually building the bench’s height and structure.
The final phases involved more specialized materials, such as limestone. Because these materials require careful handling, adults took the lead on these technical steps. A highlight of the project occurred during Green Apple Day, where participants meticulously placed tiles in the center of the bench—a challenging yet deeply rewarding task.
The finishing touches brought a splash of school spirit. After applying silicate paint, we celebrated Children’s Day by inviting students from K1 to G5 and their teachers to leave their mark. The bench is now adorned with handprints in the proud colors of our houses: Dragon, Kraken, Phoenix, and Unicorn.
This project is a powerful testament to the collaboration and community spirit that makes Lancaster such a special place. We are profoundly grateful to everyone who contributed time, effort, and resources—from those who mixed the cob to those who funded the supplies. This space exists because of our collective commitment.
Please enjoy this space, care for it, and make the most of all it offers.
Looking ahead, our next goal is to build a pergola roof to provide shade, so we may be calling on those helping hands once again very soon!
