Welcome to G1! At the start of the school year, we take time to get to know each child as a learner. One way we do this is through diagnostic assessments, which simply means we check to see what your child already knows and what they are still learning. These beginning-of-the-year activities help us meet students right where they are, making sure that lessons are not too easy or too hard. This way, we can build on their strengths and give them the support they need to grow with confidence. As the year goes on, we also use formative assessments—little check-ins during lessons, such as asking questions, observing their work, or having them share their thinking. These check-ins are not graded but give us a clear picture of how well your child is understanding new ideas. They also help us adjust our teaching so that every student keeps moving forward. By starting with diagnostic assessments and continuing with these regular check-ins, we can ensure your child’s learning journey is personalized, encouraging, and successful. In the pictures below, you can see an example of the YES/NO paddles, or «lollies» as we call them because it is more fun that way, which we use as a quick formative assessment in G1. This type of assessment encourages participation by being more interactive and might encourage those students who are more hesitant to participate to have a voice in the classroom.
