For the unit Where We Are in Place and Time, Grade One began to develop their research skills. Each student chose a different country. In small groups, they explored how people celebrate the New Year. Using guiding questions, they practised important research skills by looking at books, viewing photos, listening to videos, and sharing the facts they discovered.
They recorded this information in their research booklets. From colourful fireworks to special foods and family traditions, children asked thoughtful questions such as “Why do people wear certain colours?” and “What foods are lucky?” We focused on sharing learning in their own words. Because the work was done in teams, students also practised teamwork. They took turns speaking, managed who would answer which question, listened to each other to summarise the information, and divided the work fairly. They demonstrated profile attributes such as being good communicators, being principled when using their own words, and being caring when helping each other with difficult tasks. All this work was displayed during the G1 Academic Fair with great success. This is a first step that will help them become adept inquirers when the time comes for their exhibition project. Congratulations to them!
